Call me when you finally outlaw zoos
The halting of elephant rides is so picayune in the grand scheme of things.
Today I’m going to speak seriously on a cause very near and dear to our hearts. Expect these columns more often. Maybe once a week.
Here goes…
With the tiniest of baby steps toward humane treatment for zoo animals, a Canadian organization that oversees zoos has banned elephant rides at member facilities. I’ll bet that elephants are ecstatic they won’t have to drag entire families around on their backs all day, every day, no matter the weather.
Of course, someone is making money off this - I’m just guessing, but I’m fairly certain that only tiny amounts of cash, if any, are directed to the welfare of these dear creatures.
But they still lead shitty lives and reside in animal penitentiaries. I won’t even go into the quality of food they’re being fed.
Closed circuit cameras watch them all day and night so they can’t even consider privacy - I’m only guessing that they appreciate solitude. I’m just a cat but I know I love my quiet time.
Don’t get me wrong, there are many fine organizations world-wide that work tirelessly in the name of animal welfare. One of Nick’s favorites is Port Stephens in Australia. They tirelessly care for koalas. After the Australian wildfires these past couple of years they have been incredibly busy. Check out the link and pick out a koala to support. One of Nick’s passed this fall.
If you’ve got a few spare dollars, please consider a donation for any animal cause this holiday season.
There is no shortage of animal welfare groups that can use a little cash.
