Nick is devastated.
I - as per usual - am pissed off.
“We might as well be eating Kraft Slices, Cheez Whiz.or Cheese Puffs if we want the taste of cheese. Without UK cheddar on the table, it’s going to be a shitty Christmas,” my two-legged man servant said to me.
An article on the CBC news site tells us that we Canadians are dangerously near to losing one of our favorites - UK cheddar.
Not that our own cheese isn’t palatable, but as a rule it has been processed so much so as to eliminate any taste or nutrition.
The same goes for most of our homegrown cheese (if the government deigns to award you with a permit to raise dairy cattle). Don’t get me wrong - I do not blame Kraft or any of the plethora of Canadian cheese manufacturers.
Real cheese taste and nutrition has been legislated out of most of our domestic dairy products.
Nick explained to me, “When I was a kid I would spend summers on my Uncle Andrew’s farm.
“It was glorious - all the animals to love and woods to go wandering through. I loved milking time.
“I would help my uncle and his dogs herd the dairy cows to the milking barn where the cows were milked by hand. No machines. The pails of fresh milk were hauled to the house where the milk was run thru something called a separator, which would separate the wholesome milk from the cream.
“No processing involved. From this came whole milk, cream - some of which would be turned into butter, ice cream and cheese. No machines. Butter was churned by hand. Nothing on this planet comes close to the taste.
“Then the government got involved and a flood of ‘dairy regulations’ was the result. Stripped Canadian dairy products of any taste and, I suspect, any nutrition.
“Craving an edible, tasty cheese we turned to the UK, where we found the taste of our childhood.”
But our UK connection appears to be disappearing.
And being a feline you can imagine how crushed I am.
Pass the Kraft slices please.

I didn’t realize I could get “real” UK cheese in Canada. Looks like I might have to take a road trip to Toronto this week to see what I’ve been missing!
