I have never seen so much procreation.
Not even my Aunt Pyewacket, who was capable of birthing three litters in one breeding season.
I’ll admit it - my auntie was a bit of a slut.
And we’re not talking small litters here. There were often more kittens popping out of her than she had the capacity to feed at any one time.
My poor cousins speak of waiting up to half an hour to get their turn at a nipple. And by that time there was little of sustenance left in the poor old girl.
That’s when they turned to trash cans in alleys behind the eateries that were still open. During the pandemic many shut down - the owners, chefs and waitstaff took jobs as delivery people for minimum wage.
My aunt’s appearance always reminded me of a cat skeleton one might see when they visit a museum. But I can say with certainty that tomcats sure found her gaunt, barely alive, appearance appealing.
Anyone out there remember Twiggy? Aunt Pyewacket was the Twiggy of the feline world. But I don’t remember hearing of Twiggy popping out babies like a Pez dispenser.
Cats don’t breed much in the deep freeze that is characteristic of Canadian winters, so we didn’t see much evidence of cat breeding when Nick and I spent time in the Great White North when we were stuck in Alberta during the pandemic.
Truthfully - we were pretty much hermetically sealed in our homes during the eight winter months - so I am not sure how many cats were brave enough to face the deepfreeze and pandemic for sex.
Looking out the front window during those dark days of Canadian winter, I saw little life - human, feline, canine or anything else. I did see the odd bird which would excite me to no end.
But back to my original point - I am pretty sure I know how India’s population managed to surpass that of China.
On this year’s tour of SE Asia I can honestly say I have never seen so many youngsters all over the cities and countryside.
Kindergartens are everywhere.
I wander past two or three per block every day here in Saigon. Locations that I had previously known as fantastic eateries now house young children for ten hours a day.
Using my kitty brain I deduced that SE Asians stuck at home during the pandemic were engaging in sexual activities.
Seriously - what else was there to do?
